Orienteering at The Morgan Arboretum

October 22, 2006

A lot of rain earlier in the week (and in previous weeks) meant that the ground was quite wet in many places. On the Sunday, however, in spite of gloomy forecasts predicting rain, we were lucky. The day remained dry until late afternoon. The temperature was good and there was little wind.   A great day for Orienteering in Canada’s largest arboretum.

This site remains our most popular for Orienteering events. There were 128 “Starts” with a total participation of 170, including eight “accompanied” children under 10 years.  Among the total were two large groups of students from John Abbott and Vanier Colleges.

Six courses were set, providing a range of challenge from “Beginner” to “Long Advanced”. The latter was approximately 9 km (measured in straight lines) and had 21 controls. It actually  consisted of first completing a 3.9 km course followed by doing the Course 3.

Notable performances :

Dmitri Galovanov proved to be the top Orienteering of the day, winning the “Long Advanced” in 1:26:22.  Patrice Gagnon was 2nd in 1:33:30; Bruce Glen 3rd, one minute behind Patrice.  Stephen Novosad might have had a chance at 3rd but, somewhere on the course, he lost his control card.  Course 4 had 20 “starts”.

Michael Bole led the 19 competitors on the 5.1 km “Short Advanced”, finishing it in 1:03:47.  A few minutes back were two ‘masters’-age competitors, Lars Gawell and Yvan Duchesne.   Denise OBriain was the speediest woman on the course – something that has happened quite frequently, incidentally!

Because of the large number of students participating on Courses 1 and 2, each of these courses had two versions:  They were run both clockwise and counter-clockwise directions.

Course Two:  Stephen Novosad, along with his 8-year old son, Tobin, set the pace on 2–A completing it in 1:11:54.   Will Prince of John Abbott did the 2–B course in 1:12:30.   The combination of the two 2s had the greatest number of participants – many doing it in family or school pairs.   There were a total of 72 people on the two courses, in 57 “starts”.

Course One was also run in both directions.  Some novices must have found the “easiest” course pretty easy. The quickest time on 1–A was 0:34:54 by Sonja Gates and Jason Cordrey, followed closely by Raeann Rose and Bill Ludlow in 0:36:54.  Course 2–B was done only by Vanier College students.  On it A.Lam edged V.Navneethan: 1:05:20 to 1:05:50.  The average time for both courses was about 1¼ hours, which makes us feel that we got the distance and difficulty about right.

Our congratulations to all who came out and participated. And our thanks to The Morgan Arboretum for the opportunity of holding our event in their very fine property !

THANKS also to those members who helped at the meet, especially Richard Moreau, Jeff Blezius, Michael Bole and Leslie Hosein.
