SKI ORIENTEERING EVENT
Bois-de-Liesse Nature Park —
At minus-12 degrees, and with a strong wind blowing, it was a fairly cold day. But as cross-country skiers are well aware, moving briskly through woods keeps us warm and protected from the wind. As for the snow and trail conditions, they were the best they’ve been this winter.
Our only regret: It would have been nice to have had more participants turn up!
Derek Horan drove from the Orford area to compete and was a strong winner on the “Long Course” (12.9 km – 18 controls), finishing in 1:29:13. Bruno ? was 2nd (1:45:52) and Eric Lillie 3rd (1:48:00). The next five skiers had times that ranged from 2 hours to 2:13, surprisingly close, considering they had wide apart start times.
Joanne Frizzle was one of the five – and the top woman finisher of the day.
Bruce Glen easily topped the #2 course (8.52 km) with a time of 1:05:30. Catherine De Robert was 2nd in 2:04:19. Ariane Burke, who returned in 1:14:50, also had a strong ski but, unfortunately, mispunched at control 8.
Jean-Pierre Langlois took just one hour to complete the #1 “Short Course” (5.73 km), followed closely by Stanley Lee in 1:03:35. Outstanding amongst participants were Maude Jodoin and Marc Lemire who completed the distance in 1:12:28 while pulling their 1¼-year-old son, Arthur, in a ski pulka – the first time we’ve seen one at a local ski-O event!
Many thanks to Bruce and Elaine who picked up all 19 controls after the meet…in just one hour. Also to Jeff Blezius who checked the controls late Saturday afternoon to ensure that they were all still in place. Happily, we didn’t lose any.
