It was great weather for Orienteering:
not too hot, not too cold, and no rain. There wasn’t a large turnout of
participants but almost all of the 60 persons (including children) who took
part successfully completed their course and there were no mispunches on any
control cards.
Most of our
Club’s best Orienteers were present to take part on COURSE 4, the
‘Long-Advanced’ and fast finish times were expected – and were achieved: 4th
place went to Stephen Novosad 1:13:58; 3rd – Dmitri
Golovanov, 1:08:54; 2nd – Thomas Kneubühler, 0:59:40, but
1st place couldn’t have been foretold, unless we knew a little more about the
tall Swede who was in Montreal for only a short business stay.
Andreas
Johansson is a
world ranked Orienteer with many years of experience. He has placed near the
top at several WRE (World Ranking Events) in
The
International O Federation statistics currently rank Andreas 137th
in the World amongst elite competitors. Mike Smith, Canadian Champion, is
ranked 201. Amongst the top women Canadian, Pam James, is 56th –
pretty darn good for a North American!!
Official
leaders on our COURSE 3 (Andreas’ time, being a second run, was unofficial)
were 3 more Ramblers members: André Fekecs (1:17:03),
Oliver Cordoba (1:18:48) and Jeff Blezius (1:25:43). Jessica
Auer, a first time Orienteer, led the field on the 4 km COURSE 2,
completing it in 0:58:30. 2nd was the family team of Pierre
Mauger and Anne Emard, with 13-months old,
Stanley
Lee ran COURSE ONE
in 0:37:30, followed by family, Sylvain Harel and Marie-France
Desrosiers with their 5-year old daughter, Catherine (0:47:00).
THANKS to Bruce G, Elaine S, Stephen N and
Christian Reber, who helped with the meet, mainly with timing and flag pick-ups.
