EVENT REPORT: Morgan Arboretum – October 21, 2007

The day was exceptional for late October. Warm and sunny. The fine weather was probably responsible, at least in part, for our largest turnout of the year. There were about 100 “Starts” and a total participation of 178, including many “accompanied” children under 10 years of age. Among the total were 46 students from John Abbott College. The four courses that were offered varied as to distance but especially in technical difficulty.

Notable performances :

Simon Denier, an experienced Orienteer from France who will be in Montreal for a year, came to his first meet with us and eclipsed the competition on the 10 km ‘Long-Advanced Course’. His time: 1:26:50. Thomas Kneubühler placed 2nd in 1:33:10 and Dmitri Golovanov was 3rd in 1:40:40. The course consisted of first completing the #3 course and then doing an additional 5.3 km course.

Andreas Rutkauskus, another fast-rising star in Orienteering, topped the field in Course 3. Andreas covered the 4.7 km in 1:02:05, 12½ minutes ahead of Stéphane Côté (1:14:30). Jean-Claude Deslauriers was 3rd in 1:32:10. The average time taken by the 18 people completing the course was just over two hours. (Perhaps some should have done the ‘Intermediate’?)

Course 2 had the most participants. There were a large number of students from John Abbott College as well as families and other individuals. As a result this course was offered in two directions – clockwise and counter-clockwise. We consider the difficulty level was about the same either way and have combined their times. The two courses had 49 ‘starts’ with a total of 94 participants, including 17 ‘accompanied children’ of an average age of 9 years.

Jacek Majewski, a member of the Morgan Arboretum, and participating in his first event with us, posted the best time on the course – exactly 41 minutes for the 3.7 km. Charles Huot and 4-year old daughter, Emilie, were 2nd in 0:42:20, and Barbara Schumann with her daughter, Andrea 10, and son Dominic, 7, were 3rd in 0:50:02. 12-year-old Ryan Jones (not a novice!) finished 4th in the large field with a time of 0:51:16. Three others completed the Intermediate-level circuit in less than one hour.

Course One was basically set around features on Centre Road in the Arboretum and was 3.2 km in straight-line measured length. There were 18 ‘starts’ but the total participants numbered 62 (including 10 accompanied children and 3 babies). The Average time taken was 80 minutes.

Christine Rogers, a McGill Outdoors Club member, was the quickest around the course in 0:42:17. She had previously run the Short Advanced. The team of Charles Stephen and Edward Hearne were 2nd in 0:46:00. 3rd in 0:55:00 was Denise OBriain with husband, Jeff Secours and their two very young children – both under two years of age. 15-year old, Maya Chopova, who later did Course 2, finished 4th in 1:02:30.
