Mount-Royal Score-O - November 11, 2007

The weather was sunny and with very little wind. It was ideal for our 9^th annual Score-Orienteering meet on the mountain. There were 130 ‘starts’, going as single individuals or in groups of 2 to 4 persons. Participants ranged from family groups, often including young children, to fit athletes who were ‘out to win’. The total participation, including the little ones, was 185. Karen Oljemark brought 45 students from her John Abbott College Outdoor Education class.

After an explanation of the rules and procedures, the mass start took place outside the Grand Chalet near the Lookout at 10:24 a.m. Competitors scattered rapidly in different directions and in seconds the previously crowded plaza was quiet. Before starting everyone had two minutes to study the map and course, and to make route-choice decisions – decisions that would be crucial in determining the score they could achieve.

There was an important difference in this year’s event. I had a chance to play a less significant role. Bruce Glen, a very competent member of the Club, did all of the course planning, his very first effort at this important task…and a great success he made of it ! The feed back afterwards from the runners (and the walkers) was definitely positive.

Bruce used 40 ‘controls’ that were spread out in the area between Beaver Lake in the south, Pine, Park and Mount Royal Avenues in the east and north, and as far west (through the Mt-Royal Cemetery) as the edge of the Université de Montréal. Not only is there a lot of terrain in that mapped area, but a lot of climb too!

The farthest away sites were worth up to 20 points; the nearest ones, 5 points. Bruce had put them all in place Saturday afternoon. An innovation this year was the option of two map scales. For those who might aspire to “getting them all” – 1:10,000 – which showed all of the controls. For most people, the larger scale: 1:7,500, provided a map that was easier to read, even though it had to leave off six of the higher-point locations.

TWO HOURS was the time limit allowed. Returning “late” triggered a PENALTY of 5 points for each late-minute. Exact finish times were irrelevant for those with less than the 400-point maximum score.

Seven Orienteers succeeded in finding ALL of the controls and returning in under the 2-hour time limit. It was one of our closest finishes ever for a Score-O, with the top three placing within about two minutes of each other. Francis Falardeau was the first to return in just 1:23:58. Ottawa O Club member, Margus Hallik, was close behind in 1:25:20, and Thomas Kneübuhler came in 3rd in 1:26:09. Complete results in Excel are attached.
