We certainly were lucky to receive last
Friday’s snowfall! On the day before, when we placed
some of the 29 control flags for the event, our skis were skidding about wildly
on ice and frozen snow. In fact, the park was officially ‘closed’. Happily, by
Sunday, conditions were great again.
The numbers of xc
skiers and snowshoers were about equal. We had prepared three courses for each
discipline and, as is usual, had a complete range of participants from the
speedy and athletic to ‘beginners’ and families.
Among the skiers : Michael Bole was fastest on
the #3 ‘Long’ Course, completing the 17-control, 8.2 kms (straight-line measurement) in 1:12:10. Anthony Berkers was 2nd (1:18:40) and Bruce Glen
3rd (1:27:38). Elaine was top woman with a clocking of
1:46:00.
The #2 course (5.6 km), a shortened
version of #3 – was led by Stanley Lee, in a time of 1:24:10. Nicole
Roy was close behind for 2nd, and 3rd place went to Simon
Denier. Simon is an experienced foot Orienteer but only learned to use x/c
skis a few weeks ago.
The Snowshoe ‘Long ‘ course,
5.4 km, 17 controls – was convincingly won by David Agar in 0:57:58.
David, who drove from
Oliver Cordoba finished in 1:26:30 for 3rd place. A
few years ago Oliver surprised the World, (well, at least this writer) when he
participated in a Ski-O minutes after putting on a pair
of xc-skis for the first time in his life! And, he somehow finished the
course in a creditable time.
Patrick Fernet won the Snowshoe #2 course (4.4 km
– 16 c) in 1:35:56. Denise OBriain and Jeff
Secours topped the 3 km Short course in 1:27 – while carrying their
4-months-old son, Kyle, and for much of the way, their 2-year-old son, Ryan. Orienteering
is truly a sport for all !
Congratulations to everyone who participated …and thanks
to those who helped with the meet, especially Michael Bole, Anthony Berkers,
Stanley Lee, Bruce Glen and Elaine – as well, of course, as Gloria who did the
Registration.
