Mount Royal Park — June 9

Course #4, with a 750-meter-long stretch of Corridor Orienteering

Course #4, with a 750-meter-long stretch of Corridor Orienteering

Bruce Glen designed the four courses and, with Elaine, hung all of the 33 controls that were in use.  The two advanced courses were provided with an additional new kind of O-challenge — a 750-meter-long stretch of Corridor Orienteering.

In this section most of the features had been removed from the map leaving an inch-wide strip of white with only a few bits of the map showing. These bits formed ‘the route’ that provided Orienteers with sufficient detail to locate the 3 controls that were placed along the way.  Most of the Course 3 and 4 runners managed the section fairly well. Well, I guess it’s bound to hit us once in a while. Rain! It fell all day Saturday and was still coming down while Bruce and Elaine were hanging controls–late on Saturday evening–with the aid of headlamps and, yes, an umbrella. Unfortunately, it just didn’t let up on Sunday, not even in the afternoon when those same controls were being picked up by Vincent Vionnet and Sylvie Perrault.

Of course, it didn’t help with attendance at the event, either. There was only about 1/7 of the number we would have expected on a nicer day. ‘Got lots of maps left over! I suppose we can take some consolation in the fact that over the years, at this park, this is the first time the weather has been against us. It was really nice, though, to have the use of the park’s spacious chalet.

I don’t think the weather affected the Orienteering skills of those who did come. Running in light rainy conditions can be fun, as long as one’s orienteering skills are not cramped. Everyone who started finished their course and with times that were fairly good. Full results are here.

Thanks to those who turned up and braved the weather. Thanks also, to those who came and administrated at the event, especially Bruce & Elaine who hung the tapes and punches and also prepared the International Control Symbols; to Vincent Vionnet who single-handedly managed the start & finish timing and, with Sylvie Perrault, picked up the 33 flags that had been in use; and to Gloria who this time wasn’t quite so overwhelmed at the Registration table. The Map and the course designs were by John Charlow – the biggest thanks goes to him!

Ramblers at the 2013 U.S. Orienteering Championships

About 15 Ramblers drove down to Lake George, NY for the 2013 U.S. Orienteering Championships. As you can see from the map below, the terrain was quite demanding. The course below is from the M-21 Middle distance event. For more routes see RouteGadget, and for full results see here.

Gps track by Evan Haldane who won course #2 in 39:11 min.

It was a gorgeous day for the first event of the Club’s Spring Orienteering season. 121 enthusiasts took part including a few families with young children. The youngest, who was just 5 months of age, apparently insisted on being fed part way around his course before settling back in his pack and allowing mom and dad to get on with their race.

Congratulations to all who participated, and thanks to those who helped with the meet…especially Gloria (Registration), Bruce and Elaine (timing and control pick-ups) and Lina and grandson, Pavel (control card Checking).

Thanks also to the Pierrefonds-Roxboro Sports et Plein Air, for making the chalet available to us for the day. It is not normally open this early in the season.
